The Northern Gannet is the largest seabird in the North Atlantic, renowned for its spectacular "plunge-diving" hunting technique. From heights of up to 100 feet, these birds can hit the water at speeds of 60 mph, using specialized air sacs in their faces to cushion the impact. They are highly social, nesting in massive, noisy colonies called gannetries on steep coastal cliffs and offshore islands. Recognizable by their snowy white plumage, black wingtips, and the elegant golden wash on their heads, they are also famously monogamous, often mating for life and returning to the same nesting site every year to raise a single chick.
