The Bayon is a richly decorated Khmer temple located at the center of the ancient city of Angkor Thom in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the state temple of King Jayavarman VII, it is renowned for its iconic feature: a multitude of serene, smiling, colossal stone faces carved onto its many towers. These enigmatic faces, thought to represent the Bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteshvara, or perhaps the king himself, create a mysterious and captivating atmosphere. The temple is also adorned with extensive bas-reliefs depicting historical battles and scenes of everyday life in the Khmer Empire.
