Constructed between 1886 and 1894, Tower Bridge was designed by architect Sir Horace Jones and engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry to accommodate both road traffic and the large sailing ships that needed to access the busy Pool of London. Its unique design features two massive towers connected by two high-level walkways, with a central roadway that can be raised to allow river traffic to pass. The bridge, which is often mistakenly called London Bridge, is a masterpiece of Victorian engineering and has become a globally recognized symbol of the city.
